9 highly enjoyable rom coms you can watch on Netflix right now

The best way to unwind.

BECAUSE SOMETIMES it’s just what you need.

1. Never Been Kissed

I’M NOT JOSIE GROSSIE ANY MORE! Drew Barrymore is perfect in this film about an ugly duckling journalist who goes undercover at a high school to do a report on the ‘youth of today’. Just don’t think about the weirdness of the ending. Don’t.

2. Sleepless in Seattle

You can’t go wrong with Nora Ephron, who wrote a slew of amazing romantic comedies in the 80s and 90s. Tom Hanks plays a grieving widower who is set up on a date by his eight-year-old son. WILL LOVE HAPPEN? Of course it will.

3. My Best Friend’s Wedding

You will tear your hair out over the ridiculous choices Julia Roberts’ character makes in this film, but love her anyway.

She stars as a woman intent on sabotaging her best friend’s wedding to a girl that is ‘so wrong’ for him. Cameron Diaz is brilliant as the clueless young bride.

4. What Women Want

When an alpha-male advertising executive wakes up one morning with the ability to hear women’s thoughts, he finally starts to learn (all together now!) What Women Want.

The shine has been taken off Mel Gibson a whole lot, but this film by the queen of rom coms, Nancy Meyers, is still a good watch.

5. The Prince & Me

It’s the silliest fantasy: You’re just going about your business, being adorably yourself, when a prince falls in love with you! It’s amazing. And this is a lot of fun, starring Julia Stiles at the peak of her rom com powers.

6. Very Good Girls

A newer crack at the genre, with Elle Fanning and Elizabeth Olsen playing two friends who make a pact to lose their virginity over one summer… and then fall for the same man. Demi Moore and Ellen Barkin round out the supporting cast.

7. Penelope

Penelope (Christina Ricci) is a young woman from a wealthy family who unfortunately has the ears and nose of a pig. How will she ever find love? This film is incredibly sweet, and James McAvoy is swoonworthy as Penelope’s potential suitor.

8. Chalet Girl

OK, bear with us. Chalet Girl was pretty much ignored on release, even though it stars Ed Westwick, who was riding the crest of the Gossip Girl wave at the time.

However, future Oscar nominee Felicity Jones is very charming as a young woman working for rich snobs in the Alps while teaching herself to snowboard. Mindless fun.

9. Made of Honor

OK, now you really have to bear with us. Made of Honor is not good. Patrick Dempsey plays a man who is asked to be ‘maid of honour’ for his best female friend. Except he’s in love with her! And it’s awful! And he’s awful! But you will have SO much fun marvelling over how stupid it is.
